The college itself will use the money to implement courses in a number of high schools, including some in the counties of Bradford and Sullivan. It will offer prospective students the chance to cultivate the skills necessary to work at the forefront of the industry.

Because of the industry's expansion and the increase in consumer demand for oil and gas, companies are finding themselves constantly on the lookout for skilled applicants. The courses offered by high schools will cover a wide range of skills that will help to give candidates a 'leg up' when applying for gas and oil jobs. Areas covered in the courses will be skills such as welding, electronics, diesel technology, the repair and operation of heavy equipment, forestry and information technology. By preparing future generations of workers with traditional and evolving skills, America is helping to ensure that its own gas and oil industry will be staffed by skilled people who are able to adapt quickly to constantly changing technologies and challenges. In the middle of one of the worst economic crises in decades, the state of Nebraska in the USA is about to get a half-billion dollar boost from the oil industry. Work will begin shortly on the Nebraska section of the Keystone Pipeline - a 2,148 mile long conduit costing US $5.2 billion that will carry half a million barrels of crude oil a day from Canada to refineries in the USA.
The 215-mile section in Nebraska will cost US£490 million to build and will employ up to 900 construction workers within the state - half of them employed from the local workforce. Once the pipeline is completed, it will contribute to ensuring drilling jobs, oil rig jobs and oil careers in both Canada and the USA and be an integral part of the oil industry superstructure for years to come.
These pipelines, crossing state, county and even country borders, have been nicknamed 'traveling stimulus packages' because of the amount of revenue they bring to communities who play host to them. Not only do oil jobs benefit from their construction, but jobs on the edges of the industry as well, particularly in heavy engineering. Those working on the pipeline stay in local hotels, drink in local bars and generally spend a fair percentage of their paycheck in the local community.
The company in charge of the operation, TransCanada, has also addressed environmental concerns expressed by the residents who will have to live with the pipeline once it is completed. To build the Nebraska portion of the pipeline, TransCanada had to buy the rights to pass through the property of nearly 500 landowners, most of them farmers. Assurances that the pipeline is being built using state of the art equipment and materials including anti-corrosion polymer coatings and 24 hour monitoring from an operations center have gone some way to belaying the grievances of environmentalists and residents.
As construction is set to begin on this section of the pipeline, TransCanada are already in the planning stages for an even larger, US$7 billion pipeline that would cross the state farther to the west during 2011 and 2012, again assuring more jobs both in the construction and the oil industries. The pipeline is designed to tap into the plentiful reserve of Canadian tar sands oil which will reduce the demand for overseas oil from countries that America may have political 'problems' with. The US is determined to increase its home-produced supply of petroleum products, and the Keystone project, which is an integral part of that plan, has been years in the making. Development is continuous, with yet another project beginning in Nebraska next year to link a new branch of the pipeline beginning in southern Nebraska and connecting to a pipeline complex in Oklahoma.
Compensation to landowners who will be directly affected by the pipeline and its construction could run into millions of dollars, but the company feel that good relations with the people of Nebraska is an important part of the operation. Extensive environmental impact reports have given the company detailed knowledge on the exact impact of the pipeline and compensation packages have taken into account the needs and requirements of the landowners very carefully. The company is even willing to pay to fix fences or replace trees damaged by the construction phase.

What Can You Expect From an Oil Job?
To many, the need to earn a decent living in these hard times leads them to explore an oil job. There are people who choose to work on an oil rig as it is in their blood, but the vast majority do it for the money. It is far from easy. It is a job that demands extreme physical labour, in all weathers. Whether you work on an onshore oil rig or an offshore oil rig the physical demands are extreme. At the same time it is far from slave labour. You get fairly paid and in most cases, fantastically well paid. It is certainly a career worth exploring, whether you view it as a short term or long term option.
When it comes to looking for an oil job, the first decision you need to make is whether you want to work onshore or offshore. Onshore jobs are slightly safer and because of this, less well paid. The accommodation and catering supplied for workers is great, though it doesn't match the luxury provided on the offshore rigs. If an off shore rig is where you want to be you'll work 14 days on and 21 days off. While you're on the rig your accommodation is often of a hotel standard, with laundry and all meals taken care of. Everything is paid for by the company and meals are excellent, with canteens being open 24/7. Not to mention the entertainment available.
If you've never worked on an oil job in the oil and gas industry you'll be well advised to get your feet wet with an onshore job first. You could apply for a job as a lease hand or roustabout which is an entry level position and demands a good level of fitness. You'd be responsible for keeping the drilling field and rig safe from hazards, clean and tidy. If there is any moving of equipment necessary, you'll be the one to do it. It is hard physical labour and plenty of overtime is available, which is great for your pocket. You could be asked to dig ditches, paint or simply take out the garbage. All of this and more is required of you if you want an entry level oil job.
Once you've secured the position of lease hand/roustabout and you've been doing it successfully for a few years, there is every chance of promotion or you would be well advised to apply for either a roustabout or roughneck position on an offshore oil rig. This will get you an incredible wage for your skill set, not to mention the time off you'll be given and the care that is taken on the rig to make sure you have great accommodation, great food and plenty of entertainment. Then again why bother with entertainment when you can earn pots of overtime money!

Types of Offshore Oil Rig Jobs
Many people find that working on an offshore oil rig is an exciting job. There are many positions needed in the petroleum industry, and not all of them require college degrees. If you are interested in engineering jobs, then you will need a Master's or a Ph.D. in order to be hired. Let's say you are in great physical condition and are looking for an exciting job, then you should look into being hired as a roughneck or roustabout position on offshore oil rigs.
The lowest position is that of a Roustabout. As a Roustabout, you will have some drilling activities on the oil rig, but you will also be assigned the job of unloading supplies. It is a dirty job and hard work, but you will be paid approximately $30,000 a year. Once you have experience as a roustabout you can be promoted to a roughneck. As Roughneck, you will report directly to a Driller and you will be instructed by the Driller to carry out the drilling on the oil rig. There is a lot of co-ordination that must go on between the members of the oil rig team and you have to be in excellent physical condition because drilling is hard work. The pay is approximately $38,000 a year.
The position of Driller is a supervisory one. You will supervise the Roughnecks and Roustabouts to ensure the crew is operating efficiently, but you will also operating the drilling and hoisting equipment and monitoring the gauges on the driller's console. This is an important job because understanding the readings on the gauges will allow you to make the necessary changes needed to manage the oil rig production.
As a supervisor it is your responsibility to ensure that the workers are following company and safety procedures. It is imperative that employees wear the appropriate work clothes for their safety. You must meet regularly with the crew to discuss safety issues and conduct safety drills. You will train new recruits and assign them to a seasoned worker for in-depth training.
A Driller is also responsible for checking all of the equipment to ensure it is in good working order. All equipment checks must be logged and filed for safety audits. You will be testing the crew's understanding of all safety guidelines, policies and procedures. This demanding job requires an eye for detail and excellent communication and organizational skills. Starting pay usually begins at $47,000 a year.
Other benefits you typically receive for working on an oil rig is free medical insurance. Your airfare is paid to get you to your offshore oil rig job. Most oil rig jobs will include providing you with living quarters and meals. By no means should you expect luxury accommodations, but you will find it offers you a clean place to eat and sleep. There isn't a whole lot of privacy on oil rigs. The living quarters are similar to living in dorm rooms. You might be surprised to learn that there is still a shortage of oil rig workers in the petroleum industry. The demand for oil rig jobs are greater than the current supply of workers. These jobs are physically demanding but usually financially rewarding. A job in the oil and gas industry may just fit you like a glove.
